Dedicated to Education

OPEN FOR SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS MAY 3-4, 2018
The first three days of the performance, our guests are 5th and 6th grade students from schools in and around Ramona, California. These students come to learn and truly appreciate the history of our land. Quite literally, they experience the reality of those who headed West during the period of our great nation’s Western Expansion of the 1800’s, as they tour authentic Rendezvous Encampments. Students get a taste of life before cell phones, and microwaves….even before CARS!

The Superintendent of the Ramona Unified School District honored Steve Johnson and Jim Cooper, the founders and organizers of this event, for their “…exemplary volunteer services for the students of every elementary school… over the past three year of coordinating a springtime Old West Days encampment program to preserve our Western heritage… enrich(ing) the lives of hundreds of children for many years to come.”

He also declared March 10, 2016 “Steve Johnson and Jim Cooper Day” in the Ramona Unified School District.  Coupled with this honor were a number of student testimonials regarding their experiences at last years event; selected quotes follow:

“…enjoyed the School tent…”, “what people actually wear in the Old Times”, …learned that back then they had hard lives…”, …”how ropes were made…”, “…liked the saloon…”, “…liked the different tents with different subjects…”, “…the softness of the furs…”, “…very educational…”, “…learned about the Civil War..”, “…the wepends (sp) there really cool…”, “…an awesome day…”, “…a great job bringing the west days to Ramona…”, “… favorite part was playing a card game…”, “.. Liked the Buffalo Soldiers…”, “…learning about the struggles in the west…”, “… enjoyed the tents from different time periods…”, “…favorite presentation …was the trappers…”, “…travelling the United States by feet…was hard…”, “…hope you will continue to perform for other kids…”
